Sylvia Rhea Bass arrived bright and early this morning! I wish I had a spectacular birth story to share with you, but it was just a boring scheduled C section (thank the Lord!)
She is 7lbs even, and 19 and 3/4 inches. When she was born, she serenaded us with an angry cry. She is a feisty one.
As for her name, Scott and I finally arrived at an agreement in the eleventh hour. In the Cuban tradition, all eldest daughters are named after their mothers. The way they distinguish between the mother and the daughter is that the daughter’s name is in the diminutive. For example, my great grandmother’s name was Maria Matilde, and my grandmother was named after her and called “Matildita.” My grandmother has friends (named after their mothers) who still go by “Sarita” or “Blanquita” even though they are in their advanced years. Anyway, we missed the boat on our eldest daughter (as well as the second and the third), but when Scott wanted to name this one after me, I thought it was a sweet nod to the Cuban tradition to have our own “Silvita.” As for Rhea, my family knows I have always been a Greek mythology nut, and Rhea is the titaness mother of Zeus. When Scott stumbled across that name, we knew it was the one. All of our girls go by their middle names, and this one will be no different.
And now, for the shameless baby spam.
I think she is going to keep up with her older sisters just fine. She has spent her birth day either nursing like a champ, sleeping sweetly, or forcefully lodging protest if you displease her. I cannot fathom how we ever got along without her.
Welcome to the family, sweet Rhea! We are so grateful God sent you to us. We love you.

The children and I spent hours speculating on why you picked Rhea. We also discussed names we like that begin with R. We had so much fun. Thanks for the explanation because we were all wrong. We all agreed she is beautiful and so is her name.

What a perfect little peanut! I am now super curious about Ruthie and Rosie’s first names – I knew Wren’s already but didn’t realize all of your girls only went by their middle names until I read your blog posts on needing a name for Rhea. And I didn’t know you loved Greek mythology! Rhea is a beautiful name for a beautiful little girl.

Thank you! So the other two are Gloria Ruth and Victoria Rose. And yes, I was a huge Greek mythology geek as a child. I was really cool like that 😉

Gloria Ruth?! No wonder you said you liked my grandma’s name! 😉 Your girls’ first names all sound like they should be in a 19th century novel. Why am I not surprised?
